Botulinum toxin is a protein produced by a type of bacteria called Clostridium Botulinum. It is widely known by its commercial brand names such as Botox, Dysport and Xeomin – these are highly purified neurotoxins that are manufactured under stringent conditions.
** All 3 brands are available at J Laser and Aesthetics Clinic.
Botulinum toxin prevents nerve signals from being sent to muscles, therefore helping the muscles to relax. Doctors worldwide use this toxin medically to treat certain muscular conditions and cosmetically to remove fine lines and wrinkles.
Am I suitable for this treatment?
- known allergy to the toxin
- presence of infection at the proposed injection site
- history of nerve/muscle disease
What can I expect during the treatment and how long does it take?
Botulinum toxin is administered into the skin or muscle through very tiny injections at specific locations within the treatment area. A numbing cream can be applied prior to the procedure to minimise any discomfort. The treatment duration can vary based on the specific area being targeted, but generally takes 15 minutes or less.
What are some of the possible side effects?
The side effects are usually injection-related, such as mild discomfort during the procedure, as well as transient bruising, swelling and/or bleeding.
When can I start to see results and how long do they last?
Results can normally be seen 10 to 14 days post injection and usually last for 6 to 9 months. Repeated treatments are highly recommended, as results are cumulative and last progressively longer.
