Eye Bags

Eye Bags

What are eye bags?

Eye bags are mild swelling or puffiness under the eyes. They become increasingly common with age and when the tissues around your eyes weaken, including some of the muscles supporting your eyelids. Fat that helps support the eyes can move into the lower eyelids, causing them to appear puffy. Fluid may also accumulate below the eyes.

What you need to know

These include mild swelling, saggy or loose skin and dark eye circles.

Eye bags are caused when tissue structures and muscles supporting the eyelids weaken. There may also be concurrent skin laxity. As a result, fat that is usually around the eye can move into the area below your eyes. In addition, the space below your eyes can also accumulate fluid making the area look puffy or swollen. Some common causes include the following (list is not exhaustive)
  • Aging
  • Fluid retention (especially upon waking or after a salty meal)
  • Lack of sleep
  • Allergies
  • Smoking
  • Genetics
  • Medical conditions e.g. dermatitis, dermatomyositis, renal disease and thyroid eye disease

Treatment options include a combination of topical pigment creams (hydroquinone, Cyspera), chemical peels, vascular lasers (Dual yellow laser, Excel V laser) and Agnes (needle radiofrequency) treatment.  Please see the respective treatment subpages for more details.
